Not that whoever might be reading this will care, but this is my thirteenth attempt to start this. And honestly, I’m just gonna write this crap out and maybe someone else can make it make sense later. Not that anyone is ever likely to, given the state of the world.

My name, as I’m sure you are wondering, is Roberta Alexandria. Can you tell my parents wanted a boy? Morons. Anyway, I’m part of what is known today as Generation Last. From what I’ve been told, it has something to do with a Pepsi ad back in the days before the war. I don’t know, I don’t really remember anything but the war.

Which I’d better explain as well. The war I refer to is the Demon War. The great battle between humanity and the demons that plagued us for the last ten thousand years. Uh, give or take. The dates of much of what happened have been lost, along with much of civilization. And I suppose, to say the war started 16 yeqars ago is to be lying. It really began far further back in history. So, in an effort to maintain some sort of coherance, I’ll start at the beginning, as we understand it.

Way back in time, the first human mages lived in a magical world. Well, the non-mages lives there to, but that’s entirely not the point. This matters most to the mages, and soon enough there will be no one left but non-mages, so the distinction is pretty muddy as it is Anyway, the thing about a magical world is, it tends to be dominated by whoever can control magic the best. Humans back then, weren’t that good at magic. Short lifespans, and no inate connection to the mana around them left them on the pointy end of the spear, so to speak. Might have been the end of humanity, but some human mages got smart and greedy.

Somehow, they conned others, angels, perhaps the mythical fey, and maybe a few others as well, into helping them. They wanted a world where people could live in peace, without the evil of the demons. Now, in those days, the demons were annoying, but they were just another side in a rather large war. But they did have a taste even then, for humans. Both figuratively and literally. Anyway, they were humanity’s biggest concern at the time. So, they came up with this spell that would bind the demons into another plane, or something. I never did understand exactly what they meant.

So, those human mages, tehy lied about the spell. It did bind the demons, sure. But it also bound up all the other supernatural creatures, which I bet they were jsut so happy about. Regardless, humanity now had the world to themselves. And in that other realm, the demons suddenly found allies, and quickly destroyed many of their enemies.

Thing is, it took not so long before the demons found the first portals back to the human world. Having conqured much of their new world, the demons tried to send an army through the portals, only to have them slam shut after only a handfull of demons entered. But in time, they reopened, and a constant trickle of demons were able to return to the human world. Human world, what a silly way to refer to it. But with no name for the other realm, it is almost as bad to call it Earth, isn’t it? And I’m rambling again, clearly.

It also didn’t take long before the first demons were returned to their universe, having been ‘killed’ on Earth. The demons revelled in their newfound immortality, and felt no need not to take insane risks to kill a few humans. In the end, this might have been the end of humanity as well, but the mages were prepared for this by now. This is really the beginning of the Demon War.

In the shadows of the world, mages and demons battled on, while the rest of humanity developed without interferance. Well, not much. I hear the demons were always killing people, which the mages then covered up by making them look like natrual disasters. Still, humanity survived, and eventually thrived.

Anyway, another thing I should record is that the spell they used, was more of a massive ritual, that took thousands of mages around the world to cast. Also, the demons return was simply the result of the spell not being up to holding that many demons and other creatures back from reality. It slowly broke down over the years. Also, though no one understood it again until after the last phase of the war started, it required a conjunction of planets to work. Seems the demons had the mages convinced that it was strictly a time thing. Idiots. Anyway, things continued much the same until 2001.

On September 11, 2001, the Demon War entered a new phase. The demons had been getting lazy, and integrating themselves into human society for a few hundred years. But one of the elder deamons had a plan. Normally, such a powerful demon couldn’t escape through the portals, but he arranged for a much larger one ro be opened. He had many of the demons who were on earth at the time travel to New York, and enter the World Trade Center towers. This demon then had the others ‘killed’, and then so many demons died that close together, at the same time, it created a much larger portal, between the towers themselves. There were cameras all over that caught the whole thing, the massive fireballs that blew out the tower windows, the shimmering portal, and the demon lord himself, in all his glory.

The non-mages panicked, as you’d expect. But the police, after only a brief delay due to the sheer unbelievablity of it all, entered the fray with the demon. Mages moved in as well, but those initial attacks resulted in dead police and dead mages. THe mages were gathering their power for a massive attack, when the military got involved. While the government still didn’t believe in aliens, they had known about mages for a long time, and had recruited a few to help them prepare for an event like this. The planning, and the same slight precognitive warning that many mages had, allowed them to be ready to strike back.

The battle, I’ve heard, raged on for most of the day. te demon lord, while outnumbered, proved to be very hard to kill. but it became clear that, as time went on, he healed slower. Which was a good thing, since the mages and the military troops were getting slaughtered. Heck, from the reports of that day, even the people on the street came out to help, to take their shots at the demon. In the end, the demon lord was killed, and sent home. Or so everyone thought.

I supposed it would be easy to call them all morons for falling for it, but really, no one had any reason to doubt that the nasty demon was dead. These days, we know better. Thanks to Brianna Maher, may she burn in hell for her actions. If there is a hell, that is. Anyway, to sum things up, this Brianna was actually living with teh demon, who did a very good job of pretending to be mortal. They were in love, but he had bigger plans, and set Brianna up. She, convinced she could seal the demons off for good, prepared a ritual to do just that. However, she was wrong. THe spell did not seal the demons up, it freed them. Thus began the final stage of the Demon War.

It took 10 years, but the mages, with Brianna running the show, hunted down every demon on Earth. The final battle took place not far from where I write this. Some creative ass decided to call this little town Demon’s End. I’d kill the moron, if I knew who it was. The demon lord was one of the, if not the, last demons slain. For that, we have to thank Brianna again. That battle was 6 years ago.

I was all of 11 years old in that battle, and yes, I fought in it. I am a mage, and we needed every bit of firepower, no matter how small it might have been. I am part of Generation Last, as I said much earlier. The last generation that has to live with the existance of the demons. But more and more, it seems that we will also be the last generation of mages. Since the end of the war, magic has been fading, and no one is sure why. All we know is, it’s the end of the world as we knew it. And it seems we are too late to change anything...
